There is this saying that eyes are the windows to the soul. We do not know if it’s really the truth but what we do know is that having a pair of healthy peepers will save us a lot of trouble and is crucial to our health and wellbeing.
Maintain a Healthy Weight
Being overweight or obese can increase your risk of developing diseases like diabetes and other conditions which can lead to vision loss. It would be beneficial to maintain a healthy weight.
Rest Your Eyes
If you spend long hours staring at the computer or staring at any one thing, you can forget to blink and your eyes can get dry and blur. It is good to practice the 20-20 rule when you are working on board. Every 20 minutes, look away 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds. This can allow your eyes to have some rest.
Quit Smoking
Research has shown that smoking can cause increased risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, cataract and optic nerve damage and all these leads to blindness.
Wear Protective Eyewear
Wearing protective eyewear when working on board is mandatory especially when the work you carry out is dangerous. Make it a habit to wear appropriate eyewear at all times.
Eat Right
Keep your diet rich in fruits and vegetables, especially dark leafy greens such as spinach and kale. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids is beneficial for eye health too. Fishes like salmon, tuna and halibut are high in omega-3 content.
