It’s the second day of the New Year. I’m sure many of you have made a New Year’s resolution, or two or even more. Study shows that approximately 40 per cent of adults will resolve to change their lives when the New Year approaches.
What are some of the New Year’s resolutions? Some wants to lose weight while others want to save more money or even quit smoking. While all these are commendable goals, many fail to achieve their goals as they tend to abandon their goals less than 6 months into the New Year.
How can you defy the odds and make your New Year’s resolution a success?
It will be helpful if you can identify what motivates you. You have to find out if you are intrinsically motivated or extrinsically motivated. If you are intrinsically motivated then you might love the happy feeling of an after work out dopamine rush, meaning your satisfaction and motivation comes from within. If you are extrinsically motivated, you might achieve your goals easier if you have friends encouraging you. Find out what works best for you and stick to it!
It can be easy to say that you want to lose 10kg within a month but is this realistic? It’s more practical to plan small consistent stages to achieve your goals. If you set unrealistic goals then you will be demoralized and very soon you will abandon your goals.
Use a Calendar
Stick a calendar to your wall. If you keep up with your good habit, mark the day with an “X”. Example if you have hit the gym on that day mark the day with an “X”. Seeing all the “X” on the calendar will encourage you to continue working hard towards your goal.
Share With Your Friends and Family
If you are comfortable, share your resolutions with your family and friends so that they can encourage you and motivate you when you feel like giving up on your goals.
No matter what New Year’s resolution you have set for yourself this 2018, we certainly hope that you can successfully achieve them.
