Long working hours on board the ship with minimum time off can often lead to fatigue. Seafarers are expected to take on more demanding workloads with longer working hours with considerably lesser time off. This can be very taxing both physically and mentally for the seafarer.
Some signs of fatigue are:
- Clumsiness
- Insomnia
- Headache and dizziness
- Sluggish response
- Moodiness
You can take the following steps should you notice that you are experiencing some of the fatigue symptoms:
- Inform your Supervisor if you think that your performance is compromised because of fatigue
- Exercise daily
- Have a balanced diet
- Avoid smoking, caffeine & alcohol consumption
- Optimize your rest hours by sleeping and resting fully
