What to Eat for Optimum Gut Health

Do you know that gut health is very important?  The gut comprises of a whole lot of microbes that affects our physiology and maintain our body and brain functions at the healthy level.

There are some foods which are beneficial for our gut health.

  1. Yogurt

Yogurt contains friendly bacteria known as probiotics and this is a good bacteria that lives in our digestive tract and aids in our digestion, thus keeping our gut healthy.  Probiotics helps in alleviating digestive problems like bloating, diarrhea and constipation.

Do note that not all kinds of yogurt have probiotics.  Do check the labels for “live and active cultures”.

2.Ginger

Ginger is often used in Eastern medicine to cure digestive problems and treat nausea.  Some sailors are known to take ginger to alleviate their sea sickness.  Ginger can move food from our stomach to our small intestine quicker and can reduce heartburn, nausea and stomach discomfort.

3. Apple

Apples contain rich source of pectin, a soluble fiber.  Apples are also rich in Vitamins A and C and minerals such as folate, potassium and phosphorus.  These help in restoring good digestive and intestinal health.

4. Papaya

The digestive enzyme papain found in papaya aids in the digestive process by breaking down protein fibers.  This leads to easier digestion and better absorption of nutrients by our body.  Papain also helps to ease irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

5. Beetroot

Beetroot contains a good source of fiber, potassium and magnesium which are helpful in restoring healthy digestive function.  The nutrients in beetroot helps feed friendly gut bacteria.
