How to increase Good Cholesterol

Do you know that not all cholesterol is bad?  There is a “good” type of cholesterol which our body needs.

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is known as the “good” cholesterol because it helps remove other forms of cholesterol from your bloodstream.  Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is the bad cholesterol that you would want to keep in check.

When your body has higher levels of HDL cholesterol you will have a lower risk of heart disease.

Just as the wrong food choices can increase the LDL cholesterol, the right food choices can naturally raise HDL cholesterol and effectively lower LDL cholesterol.

Below are a few types of food which you can consider for increasing HDL cholesterol.

1.   Avocado

Avocados boast an excellent source of folate and monounsaturated fatty acids which are beneficial in boosting HDL and lowering LDL.  Avocados are filled with fiber which naturally helps to keep cholesterol in check.

Olive oil can lower the inflammatory impact of LDL cholesterol on your body.  Extra-virgin olive oil breaks down at high temperature so do make sure to cook them at low temperatures.

3.   Nuts

Nuts like pistachios, peanuts, almonds and others are rich in heart-healthy fats.  They are also high in fiber and they contain plant sterols which can block the absorption of cholesterol in your body.

Do remember that to achieve and maintain a healthy body, dietary changes and lifestyle choices matter.  Incorporating exercises in your daily life can help in lowering your LDL and increasing your HDL levels.
