Foods for Your Brain

Our brain being the control centre of our body is very important, yet many of us are not aware that the foods we eat can affect how our brain functions.  The foods we eat play a role in keeping our brain healthy and helping in our concentration and memory.

So what should you eat for better brain health?


  1. Broccoli

If we were not a green advocate when we were younger, our mums would have surely nagged at us to eat our greens especially the broccoli.  Why so?  Broccoli is packed full with Vitamin C, Vitamin K and choline which can help in keeping our memory sharp.  Mummy knows best isn’t it?


  1. Blueberries

Blueberries protect our brain from oxidative stress and can reduce the effects of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.  Blueberries have been proven through studies to significantly improve learning capacity and motor skills.


  1. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil can help suppress cells responsible for inflammation and help with memory loss.  Coconut oil is very versatile and can be used in many foods and recipes.


  1. Dark Chocolate

The darker the chocolate, the more health benefits it contains.  Skip the milk and white chocolates and go for the minimally processed dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa.  Chocolates contain high levels of flavonol which is rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.  These can help lower blood pressure and improve blood flow to the heart and brain.


  1. Fatty Fish

Fatty fish is often the top choice for brain food.  60% of our brain is made of fat and half of this fat is omega-3 kind of fat.  Omega-3 helps build brain and nerve cells, and these fats are essential for learning and memory.  Omega-3 also slows down age-related mental decline.  You can load up on omega-3 rich fatty fishes like salmon, trout and sardines.
