Importance of Fiber in Your Diet

We have frequently heard that protein is important for the body or Vitamin C is good for our health.  Fiber is usually overlooked but it actually plays an important part in our overall health.

Fiber is the indigestible parts of plant foods like vegetables, fruits, grains and legumes.  It is an essential type of carbohydrate which helps to keep our digestive system healthy.

There are basically two types of fiber which serves different purpose and have different health benefits.

Soluble Fiber

Insoluble Fiber

Insoluble fiber absorbs water to help soften our bowel content and thus supporting regular bowel movements.  You can find insoluble fiber in cereals, nuts and wheat bran.
