Up to 5 years’ extension for STCW certificates upon approval
Noting the pandemic’s persistent causing numerous inconveniences in renewing certificates issued under the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch (STCW), both the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore (IMDA) continue to extend their provisions for certificate expiries.
Referencing the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)’s circular dated 2 April 2020, administrations were encouraged to adopt a pragmatic and practical approach to STCW certificates’ extension. Those include medical certificates, and endorsements due to the COVID-19 outbreak. In its latest announcement, the Singapore authorities will be granting the extension only on a case-by-case basis. Seafarers are to make formal applications to apply for the extensions. Assessment for might be conducted via telephone call or video conference. Approved applications will be granted a five-year extension.
Notwithstanding, the authorities encourage seafarers to apply for certificate revalidation before the expiry dates. Previously, both MPA and IMDA granted a six-month extension for certificates expiring between 1 April 2020 and 1 October 2020.
